Using TXF in Work Portal
Learn how to use TXF with client jobs you accept from Taxfyle (with integration support available for ProConnect and Drake Tax)
What TXF does: Automatically extracts data from your client's tax documents and sends it to your tax software, saving you hours of manual data entry while streamlining document review. Free to use: TXF is complimentary for all Taxfyle platform jobs you work on, including B2C retail jobs and select B2B2C partnership jobs where you are signing and filing on the client’s behalf. TXF is not available for B2B outsourcing jobs.
How it Works
This walkthrough shows you exactly how to use TXF from the moment you accept a job to importing the extracted data into your tax software. That way you can spend less time on data entry and more time on what matters.
Step 1: Accept a Job and Check for TXF Processing
After you accept a job in the platform and the client's documents are uploaded to Work Portal, look for a banner above the Documents card that says the tax documents have been extracted in TXF. If the banner doesn't appear right away, refresh the page.

Important limitations:
- Individual returns only: TXF extracts data for Form 1040 individual returns. Business entity documents may be misclassified as Schedule C.
- Client-uploaded documents only: TXF only processes documents uploaded by clients or Taxfyle admins. Documents you upload (draft returns, final returns, extension confirmations, etc.) won't be extracted.
Step 2: Open TXF to Review Extracted Data
Click the Review & Export button to open TXF in a new tab. You'll see all the client's documents linked from the job in a work request view with the:
- File name
- Form type (W-2, 1099-INT, etc.)
- Status
- Completed - Data extraction finished and ready for review
- Extracting - Data extraction in progress
- Unsupported - Document type not recognized by TXF
- Date uploaded

Supported forms: TXF only recognizes certain tax forms. Documents marked as "Unsupported" won't be included in the client's return. See the complete list of supported forms to verify which documents TXF can process.
Step 3: Verify or Edit the Extracted Data
Once a document shows Completed, TXF has finished extracting the data. Review the information from the document on the right, and make any needed corrections on the left (your changes will auto-save as you type).
Don't use ProConnect or Drake? You can still benefit from TXF's document review experience. TXF displays all client documents in one folder for quick side-by-side comparison, while Work Portal requires clicking through documents one at a time. Even if you won't export to your tax software, TXF streamlines your document review process.
Step 4: Review All Information Before Export
When all documents show Completed, click Review and export to see a summary of all extracted data:
- Personal information
- Business activity (Schedule C)
- Rental activity (Schedule E)
- All other tax data
Use the Form Assignment tab to adjust how data is assigned to different people on the return (taxpayer vs. spouse). TXF automatically assigns documents based on available information, but some documents may remain unassigned if context is missing. This is your final chance to verify everything before the data maps to your tax software.
Multi-year returns: If the client uploaded documents for multiple tax years, use the year dropdown next to "Final Tax Review" to verify each year separately.
Supported versions:
- ProConnect: Tax years 2019-2025
- Drake: Drake Tax 24 and Drake Tax 25 (tax years 2024-2025). Drake Tax Online not supported.
Step 5: Tax Software Integration
For ProConnect Users
TXF defaults to Drake as the tax software integration for all workspaces. If you use ProConnect, click Integrations on the left sidebar to integrate.
This let’s you set ProConnect as your Default tax software integration. Once updated, all exports will go to ProConnect instead of generating a Drake file.
Drake user? You don't need to update your tax software integration (Drake is already set as the default). You can skip this step.
Step 6: Exporting to your Tax Software
Software support: Follow the instructions below for your tax software. If you don't use ProConnect or Drake, you can skip this step, but we still recommend using TXF for the improved document review experience covered in Step 3.
For ProConnect Users
Click Confirm and Generate in the Form Assignment tab. TXF will prompt you to send the data directly to ProConnect.
First-time setup required: Make sure your ProConnect account is connected to TXF before using this feature. Follow this setup guide if you haven't connected it yet.
Important: ProConnect creates a new client return with each export. Wait until all client documents are uploaded before sending the return to ProConnect (this prevents duplicate returns and saves you cleanup time).
For Drake Users
Click Confirm and Generate in the Form Assignment tab. TXF will create a Drake import file and download it to your computer.
File naming:
- Files ending in D4 = 2024 tax return (Drake Tax 24)
- Files ending in D5 = 2025 tax return (Drake Tax 25)
Step 7: Complete the Import
For ProConnect Users
After sending the data, click View export history from the work request screen to confirm the return was successfully created in ProConnect with all the extracted information. A ProConnect return export gets completed in seconds!
Multiple tax years: If the client has back taxes for multiple years, you'll need to generate each year separately:
- Use the year dropdown in the Final Tax Review screen to select the tax year
- Click Confirm and Generate to send that year to ProConnect
- Repeat for each additional year
- Track progress for each year using the year dropdown in the Export history screen
For Drake Users
- Copy the downloaded file from your Downloads folder
- Paste it into your Drake Imports folder
- Open Drake and create a new return
- Enter the taxpayer's SSN
- Drake will automatically detect and prompt you to import the file

Best Practices
Review before exporting:
- Review extracted data from documents for peace of mind to ensure everything was done accurately
- Check the Form Assignment tab to catch any unassigned documents that might be missing context
- Use the Final Tax Review screen as your "master sheet" to verify all data before sending to your tax software
Minimize re-exports:
- Wait until all client documents are uploaded before your final export (this prevents duplicate returns in ProConnect and reduces cleanup work)
- You can still export multiple times as documents arrive if needed
Remember:
- TXF is optional. Use it when it saves you time, but it's not required for platform jobs
- TXF is complimentary for all Taxfyle platform jobs (you only pay your normal tax software fees)
- ProConnect creates a new return with each export; Drake preserves existing data when re-importing
That's It!
You've just automated what normally takes hours of manual data entry. The return is now in your tax software and ready for your review and any final adjustments before sharing a draft with the client in Work Portal.
